Poetry Challenge #270-Achebe's Way
Chinua Achebe (born 11/16/1930) was a writer, poet, editor, and is called the founding father of African fiction. Born in eastern Nigeria, of the Igbo tribe, he often wrote about his native Nigeria and much of his works explore themes of race and heritage. Known more for his essays and novels, notably Things Fall Apart, than poetry, Achebe was nevertheless, awarded the Commonwealth Poetry Prize in 1972 for his first poetry collection, Beware, Soul-Brother, and Other Poems. Achebe, who began writing in his 20s, once said that the way an Irish writer wrote about Nigeria prompted him to begin. He died in 2013.
Pine Tree in Spring
by Chinua Achebe
Pine tree
flag bearer
of green memory
across the breach of a desolate hour
Loyal tree
that stood guard
alone in austere emeraldry
over Nature’s recumbent standard
Pine tree
lost now in the shade
of traitors decked out flamboyantly
marching back unabashed to the colors they betrayed
Fine tree
erect and trustworthy
what school can teach me
your silent, stubborn fidelity?

Poetry Challenge #146-Happy Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day!
Summer and ice cream go together. What kind of ice cream is your favorite? Vanilla? Chocolate? Razzle Dazzle? Tutti-Frutti? Moose Tracks? Peanut Butter and Jelly?
What do you choose if you go to an ice cream stand? If you made up a new flavor, what kind would it be? No combination is off limits…at least not until it’s taste tested.
What’ll it be: mashed potato ice cream, beer ice cream, olive oil ice cream, buffalo wing ice cream, goat cheese ice cream or candied bacon ice cream? Yum!
Poetry Challenge #146

An ode is a short poem praising something. In celebration of National Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day (yes, it’s a real thing, celebrated every July 1st)
Write an ode to your favorite ice cream or to a flavor you wish existed.

Poetry Challenge #101-End of Summer
It’s hard to believe summer is coming to an end. Long, sunny days are growing shorter. Nights are cooler. Trips to the beach or pool are less frequent (or maybe more…)
What signs tell you that summer is almost over? Back to school sales? The one branch of red leaves? Geese flying overhead?
What do you do to celebrate the end of summer? Take one last swim or hike? Bake (or eat) one more pie? Have one more campfire and roasted marshmallow?
